ASSISTANT's objective is to provide accessible support for the use of public transportation, seamlessly spanning trip planning via an online application, scheduling and providing guides for multi-step journeys, including intermodal and trans-national transfers with provision for supplying information to help the end-user from the last transit stop to the final destination. The target group is older people, particularly those travelling to novel places or beginning to use public transportation after losing ability to drive themselves. The system will be fully accessible and may be of use to travelers new to an area, young people, and those with accessibility problems. ASSISTANT builds its technology on familiar interfaces, the PC and mobile phone, providing only relevant information at the right time and in the right fashion via audio, visual and haptic cues. ASSISTANT provides safety by error detection and remediation. By providing a single application that provides all the functionality of both PC and smartphone it provides simplicity making data transfer seamless and transparent. The system identifies the vehicle to board and signals to the user its arrival, and reminds the user when to exit. ASSISTANT predicts or anticipates users and public transportation position when location data is missing. ASSISTANT's exploitation plan is envisioned as a purchased application and a maintenance (maps and bus schedules) service sold by the application producer or by a regional public transportation company. The project will involve users from the very beginning of the project, not only as a validation group but also as an information source during design. The project demonstrators will include public transportation companies in Austria and France and Spain ensuring a solution which takes into account European cultural, structural, and market diversity.
